MEMBERSHIP OF ROYAL COLLEGE FOR PAEDIATRICS AND CHILD HEALTH

MRCPCH

Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) is achieved by passing three theory exams and one clinical exam. This is approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) as meeting the required standards

  • It is recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • No entrance exams like PG NEET, PLAB/IELTS are required to enroll for MRCP exams.
  • MBBS Degree with 1 year of Internship is the eligibility to apply for MRCP, UK.
  • On completion of the course doctors can work in clinical positions and academic positions in India and abroad.

Exam Format

  • Foundation of Practice (FOP) – theory exam
  • Theory and Science (TAS) – theory exam
  • Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP) – theory exam
  • MRCPCH Clinical exam – OSCE

Candidates take the three theory examinations on a computer at a test centre. Theory examinations can be taken in any order and are non-sequential. There are usually three sittings of each exam per year.

Candidates must pass the three theory examinations before they can sit the MRCPCH Clinical examination.

Theory and Science (TAS) - theory exam

FOP comprises of 85 questions (79 Single Best Answer & 6 Extended match Questions). Total duration of this exam is 2hrs 30min.

Foundation of Practice (FOP) - theory exam

TAS comprises of 80 questions (70 Single Best Answer & 10 Extended match Questions). Total duration of this exam is 2hrs 30min. Both the exams can be taken on the same day with a break of 1hr.

Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP 1 & 2)

AKP comprises of 2 papers of 75 questions each. Each paper is held for a duration of 2hr 30min on the same day with a break of 1hr.

OSCE – Clinical Examination

MRCPCH Clinical is the final element of the MRCPCH (membership exam). It assesses whether the candidates have reached the standard in clinical skills.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in:

  • communication
  • history taking and management planning
  • establishing rapport with both parents and children
  • physical examination
  • child development
  • clinical judgement
  • organisation of thoughts and actions
  • recognition of acute illness
  • knowledge of paediatrics and child health
  • professional behaviour
  • ethical practice.

The candidate should have passed all three theory exams before applying for MRCPCH Clinical with 12 months in posts involving the care of emergency paediatric patients
